CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

MY PEN HOVERED over the stationary. For the past ten minutes, I had been struggling with starting my letter to Versillia. How could I tell them that not only had my task in Rhaestras concluded incomplete, but the High Priestess had been murdered while I was here?

The pharmacy’s cat eyed me lazily and its tail tapped the back of my hand while I debated. There was no avoiding it, but they would also want answers that I couldn’t give. I left the priestesses to mourn and prepare without having to move around Elián and me. We were outsiders in their space, and even though Cera had been nothing but warily appreciative of my help, I knew that she had much more to do than talk with me.

I worried at my lower lip as I finally began to write to Mathieu and Uncle Hendrik. I started by reassuring them of my own safety and then informed them of Isabella’s fate the night after our discussion. The fact that it was a Vyrkos assassin couldn’t have been a coincidence—right? And would they still allow me to continue to Nethras if they knew that? If I informed them that the office in which I had talked with Isabella became the site of her untimely death not a few hours later?

For those reasons, I left out the race of the attacker and stated that the priestesses and Rhaestran guards were still investigating. At the end, before signing off, I added that I had every intention of continuing my mission of speaking with Lylithan leaders. With Isabella gone, the importance of getting Roalld on board wasn’t just significant because he represented my home city, but because we were running out of options.

The same female who had sent my letters last night nodded as I told her the message needed to be marked as urgent. I paid extra for the postage and bid her a good afternoon.

Elián followed me to a café across the street, and I claimed a seat inside to escape our rooms and the heat of the day. I had stuffed Lee’s book, as I began to think of it, in my pocket when we returned briefly to the lodging house after returning from the Temple. There was a cluster of low, wooden seats, and I claimed one nearest the large, open window. Though the sun was baking the streets, the wind from outside was cool.

The both of us sipped chilled papaya juice, and I tried to keep my mind on the things that I knew, that I could control.

My book sat opened in my lap, but my eyes were unseeing on the page. Isabella was with the Godyxes and the Mother, now. And Cera, the thorn in my side since I was six years old, was to be High Priestess. A week ago, I may have been affronted by that fact, but now, after seeing the respected priestess she had grown into, I found that I also…respected her. It was clear that she cared about her sisters above all but the Goddess she served.
